The best methods of prayer journaling for beginners
This post is all about how to prayer journal.
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably heard of prayer journaling, and maybe even tried once or twice. For a lot of us, prayer journalling was a fun activity when we were younger, but as life gets busier and more exhausting, sitting down for an hour to journal out all our thoughts isn’t always practical. But does that really mean you just… shouldn’t do it?
Want to know how to prayer journal in a way that you’ll keep up with? Try this!
Instead of totally giving up on prayer journaling, I’ve come up with a great way to keep up with it daily, without making it feel like a task that you consistently end up putting off.
What my prayer journal looks like
I prayer journal in a book with completely blank pages (no lines). I organize my prayers into categories. Two pages are dedicated to each category (then I can add more later if needed).
Examples of categories that I put at the top of the pages include:
- People
- Relationships
- Me, myself, & I
- Future
- Finances
- Decisions
Obviously, you can add more categories if you think of them. Under each header, write down your prayer requests anywhere on the page (in no organized way – be creative!). You might add additional bullet points underneath with more specific requests that relate to the item. Adding the date in a different colour right next to it is helpful too; in just a glance, you can be reminded of people or things you need to be praying for, and you can easily see old prayers that have been answered.
This style of prayer journal is so nice because it eliminates the task of having to handwrite every word of your prayer, and simply gets the thought onto paper. You can choose to either leave it at that, or to pray more thoroughly in your head or out loud.
There’s also tons of room for creativity. Make your journal look just how you want it to look! Mine is colourful and artistic, and I’m always trying out new fonts and doodles.
What do you think of this way of prayer journaling? Do you know how to prayer journal in another way that works for you?
